Pies and The Producer back together for one last show of 2021.

We wrap the first two Ashes tests and look ahead to the next three.

Then we touch on the last few weeks of NFL and EPL and tip our next rounds/

We recap the end of the Formula 1 season. Max Verstappen delivered on the promise Christian Horner saw in him all those years ago with a victory in the final race of the season. Lewis Hamilton did everything he could, but the Red Bull finally dethroned Mercedes.

Then the team give us some highlights, lowlights and predictions for 2022.

From all of us here at Bats Balls. Merry Christmas and here's to a slightly more normal 2022.

The Ashes are set to start this week and The Producer is joined by Erik Nielsen and Darren DeKretser on his Bats and Balls debut.

Erik and Darren break down both the Australian and English line ups. Is Ben Stokes ready to carry England?, Will Starc hold his place in the side? are just some of the questions to be answered in this series.

Big Bash has returned with both Sydney teams getting off to a great start. In other cricket around the world India destroyed New Zealand in their last test match even though Ajaz Patel was huge taking all 10 wickets in the 1st innings.

In the EPL Brighton keep finding ways not to lose with 2 equalisers late in games in the last week. Darren's Leeds are near the bottom but fighting hard just needing to convert some draws into wins. Erik's Man City are on top and going very well.

Motorsport saw the Bathurst 1000 and a crazy F1 race over the weekend. Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth won at Bathurst after having the best car all weekend. F1 was just crazy with 2 red flags and loads of drama and Lewis Hamilton taking the win. This means we are all tied up in the drivers championship coming into the last round.

Erik then ends the show by talking MLB and the player lockout. Can they fix the issues before the season starts?

The Producer is wrapped in cotton wool and plaster so he should make it through the full episode. We're back to cover all the sport.

In the NFL it's a funny season. Are the Chiefs back? It's too early to tell but signs are good. The Rams are in a hole and the Pats could be the best team going round.

In Soccer we've got the International weekend and World Cup Qualifiers. By the time you listen to this Australia will have played China in Sharjah. EPL is back this week and we give out tips. Arsenal have gone from the cellar to the hottest team in football in the space of 2 months.

Australia beat New Zealand comfortably in the T20 World Cup Final in Dubai. New Zealand have played the final of all three forms of the game in the last couple of years taking out the test championship but losing both forms of limited overs finals. Our friend Erik may have coined the phrase DSC So Big.

SVG is close to wrapping up the Supercars title with one more round at Eastern Creek before Bathurst. And in the F1 Lewis Hamilton kept the title alive with a stunning victory in Brazil.

Meanwhile in other sport, Pies is loving the NBA season because it actually looks like Basketball again. Josh Giddey and Patty Mills are doing some good things too.

Australia and England are heading to Brisbane to prepare for The Ashes. A preview will be out shortly.

And we finsih off with The Producer's plans to fix the lopsided NRL draw.

Pies, The Producer and Colbee check out the lead up runs and try and find the winner of the 2021 Melbourne Cup. With the absence of many foreign raiders, Incentivise is the clear favourite for the cup. Can it get two miles? Who is the biggest threat? Can Colbee box up 11 horses and still miss the trifecta?!

It's been a long time. But Pies is back in the Bats and Balls Studio with The Producer. After a short catch up we're back into the sports.

In the NFL Arizona look unstoppable at the moment. There's a few other NFC teams nipping at their heels though. In the AFC no team has fewer than 2 losses which makes for a competitive conference.

In the EPL Liverpool won the one fixture the fans look forward to every season. A 5-0 drubbing of Manchester United at Old Trafford no less. Mo Salah is the best player in the world right now. But Liverpool may still only be the third best team in the Premier League the way Chelsea and Manchester City are playing. It's gonna be a fascinating run to the title with these three special teams. Brighton fell to City and face the Reds this week which may see them finally drop out of the European positions.

The T20 World Cup is under way. Australia won their first match., But Pakistan have been the surprise packets beating India and New Zealand. Batting coach Matt Hayden has them firing.

State of Rest won the Cox Plate despite severely hampering 3yo Anamoe in the run to the post. Craig Williams looked confident waiting for the result but it wasn't to be. The question has to be if that was a midweek at Moe, do they uphold the protest. And the answer is yes. In other races Forgot You won the Vase and is headed for the Derby. But connections unfortunately won't be sending the 3yo to the Melbourne Cup. Keep an eye out for our Derby Day tips and our annual Melbourne Cup show.

In other sport Max Verstappen held off Lewis Hamilton in the US Grand Prix while Supercars are back at Eastern Creek for the next 4 weeks straight.

The NBA tipped off last week and the Chicago Bulls lead the standings with the Lakers slowly finding their groove. Golden State are out in front of the West.

Queensland is the centre of the Rugby League world with the announcement of the Dolphins as the 17th NRL club. And the Q Cup Grand Final decided in the final minutes. Plus the Panthers have leaned into their bad boys tag in the aftermath of their NRL Premiership.

Not much player movement in the AFL Trade Period. Most notable were the lack of late trades.

Soccer played out a big international weekend topped off with a home win for Japan over The Socceroos. EPL is back this weekend and we give our tips.

The big horse races continue this week. At Royal Randwick we've got the big sprint showdown in The Everest while Caulfield hosts the Caulfield Cup. We'll give our tips for those races. Stay tuned to our blog and socials for full selections on Saturday morning.

The Producer put Pies on leave due to him being too pro Penrith and Erik Nielsen joins the show.

In the NRL GF the Panthers got the job done against the Rabbits but was Nathan Cleary really the best player on the field? The Producer can't work out why Referees get tagged at pedantic when players constantly break rules. Former West Tigers player Benji Marshall has retired and the Tigers have changed their logo and Erik gives his opinion.

Brighton keep on getting points in the EPL and sit 6th going into International Break. Liverpool and Man City had a draw and only 2pts separate the top 6 teams.

International Break means World Cup Qualifiers. Can Demark and Australia get one step closer to locking in their place in the World Cup?

In the NFL the Bucks got the win over the Patriots in the Tom Brady Cup. The Cardinals are on fire as the only undefeated team and destroyed the Rams. While the Giants got their first win of the season. Can they make a run to the playoffs?

The Bats and Balls Podcast team has started doing weekly Horse Racing Tips. Check out the website batsandballspodcast.com to see the teams tips each week. In the week just gone Pies and Colbee were on fire with the tips.

Erik talks about the IPL and the quality of Indian players we haven’t heard of yet. The guys then talk about the upcoming Ashes Series. Will it be as good as the Indian Test Series last year?

Lastly Erik talks about the MLB playoffs and makes his predictions on who will go all the way. Erik then tells the Padres what they have to do in order to go to the next level. Will they listen?

Pies and The Producer joined via Zoom by Mendy.

We recap the NRL Prelims and pick our winner for the NRL Grand Final.

Melbourne broke their AFL Premiership drought with a second half thumping of Western Bulldogs. Christian Petracca won the Norm Smith medal with a stellar performance.

Tottenham played Arsenal back into form. While a Liverpool draw at Brentford was enough to top alone. There's a pack one point behind including Brighton!

The good teams are emerging in the NFL. LA Rams and Arizona Cardinals have set up a mouth watering clash this weekend. And Tom Brady goes back to Foxborough.

Mendy catches us up with all the darts competitions. Plus we have a look at a few other sports.

And there's a few horse racing tips also.

After substandard performances Pies and The Producer keep getting selected for the big games. It's almost like they're mates with the people running the podcast.

In the NRL Manly were far too good for a depleted Sydney Roosters. While in the other game Penrith held on against a brave Parramatta.

In the AFL it all boils down to this. Apart from a shaky end to the season for the Dogs, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs have been the benchmark all season. In a season of turmoil, moving house at short notice, lockdowns, quarantines and footy, these two teams deserve to be there on that twilight evening in September... in Perth.

Tottenham haven't got a point since Pies refrained from cursing them with #PiesKnows. Even the whiff of contention is enough to turn Spurs to water.

F1 is back this week in Russia. While in cricket, former St Clair Hawk Hannah Darlington starred in her first ODI for Australia vs India. And Mitch Marsh has made another bid to be recalled to the Australian ODI mens team.

The Producer is on the man shakes and Pies ran a half marathon. We're pumped for another week of finals footy.

In the NRL all eyes were on the Panthers and Rabbitohs after a war of words between the coaches and it didn't disappoint. Wayne won the battle. Can Ivan get his troops back up to win the war? The Roosters got out of jail against the Titans and the Eels did enough to see another week.

It had been staring us in the face the whole time. Forget ladder positions. Melbourne and Western Bulldogs had been the best sides in the AFL for most of the year. That they won their Prelims was no surprise. But the manner in which they did it showed just how powerful both teams are. It'll be a fitting Grand Final in two weeks time.

Plus we rattle home with some EPL, NFL and Daniel Ricciardo's first win for McLaren. The Shoey is alive and well in the papaya.

Mendy joins Pies and The Producer this week.

The NRL season has finished for half the teams. Canterbury finished off a tough year with an inspired defeat of Wests Tigers. While the Corey Norman era is over at St George Illawarra. The Finals are finally upon us. Can anyone stop Melbourne? Are Penrith, Souths or Manly legitimate contenders? How remarkable is the Roosters finish given their injury toll?

In the AFL we're down to the Prelim Finals. Melbourne have been the standard all year. Can they make the big one? Is Port good enough to make it? In an unpredictable season anything is possible.

Tottenham sit atop the Premier League table. Harry Kane is staying. And Pies has decided not to curse them with #PiesKnows this year.

NFL kicks off today. Join our tipping comp at ESPN Tipping. Links on our socials pages.

Max Verstappen continued his winning ways in Formula 1. Then Mendy chips in with the rest of world sport. Surfing, boxing, darts and athletics are all on the agenda to finish off the show,

While half the NRL rests for the Finals. We're pushing through to maintain our form for the big games.

Brendan and Josh are back to review all the big headlines from the NRL. Latrell's reckless hit on Joey Manu. The Eels turnaround in form. And the battle for 8th.

In the AFL Port Adelaide and Melbourne will "host" Prelim Finals, GWS held on for the slimmest of victories over Sydney and will play the disappointing Geelong without Toby Greene. And Western Bulldogs beat Essendon in the wet to book a date with Brisbane.

Cristiano Ronaldo is joining Manchester United after punking the Red Devils fans with early media reports he was signing with City. Harry Kane is still available even though Tottenham are winning and sit atop the Premier League table.

The most exciting motorsport news was seeing the Bats and Balls WRX go around in Gran Turismo SPORT. As the Belgian F1 Grand Prix ended in farce.

Brendan, Erik and Josh on the Zoom call this week.

First up is the NRL and The Producer has a few more bees in bonnet. Are the Wests Tigers heading in the right direction? And the Eels are obviously in the big 6 still, right?

Plus we have a look through the NRL Fan Poll and discuss the average NRL Fan and how average their thoughts are!

The AFL Finals are upon us. Melbourne look primed to win the flag. But it looks a very open Finals. Will there be an upset in the first week? There could be four of them.

And the English Premier League has given us some fun results. Including Brighton Hove Albion being in a Champions League spot. Stop the competition!

Pies and The Producer back on the airwaves brought to you by the wonders of the NBN. After a couple of weeks of watching only the Olympics we're back watching regular sport again.

In the NRL Brendan found some interesting rule interpretations and application of the laws of the game. While Josh was puzzled by how little Newcastle use Kalyn Ponga.

The AFL have a dream fixture with the Top 4 sides playing off for the Minor Premiership and jockeying for positions. The rest of the Top 8 is not locked in with GWS and Essendon needing to win to maintain their spots. The Giants will have to spoil the Eddie Betts farewell match. While the Bombers face the might of Collingwood. West Coast and Fremantle are waiting to pounce if either slips up.

Supercars have rejigged their season and released the last rounds. Bathurst has been pushed back to November with a Summer Gold Coast 500 if you can get into Queensland!

The English Premier League kicked off this weekend. Most of the big clubs started with wins. Manchester United and Chelsea looked really good. Liverpool are a lot stronger with actual centre backs available for selection. And Tottenham have massive Ewing Theory potential if Harry Kane does ship out for the reported 150 million price tag. Meanwhile Man City stumbled at the first hurdle. But it's early days.

Finally we whip around the grounds for other sports. MLB had their first ever Field of Dreams game and it was spectacular. The NBA Summer League has unearthed a few fun rookies. NFL is into preseason and kicks off in 3 weeks. And India took a 1-0 lead over England in the test series.

In the middle of a global pandemic it's amazing that the Tokyo 2020 organising committee could get a games going at all. That they could bring the athletes of the world to Japan and get them to compete with no socialising, in front of no crowds, at such a high level is nothing short of a miracle.

Australia equalled its best gold medal count with 17. Thanks largely to the women's swim team. While aquatic sports in general won 15 of the 17 gold for Australia. Aussies tore up the track and field events with three medals. And the Boomers won their first ever medal after so many heartbreaking moments over the years.

Penrith's own Jess Fox won a gold and a bronze in the whitewater canoeing and Penrith born Melissa Wu won a bronze in diving which is almost as good as gold given the two Chinese divers were out of this world.

Internationally there were some amazing performances. Karsten Warholm burning up the 400m hurdles track sits atop the mountain. But Eliud Kipchoge going back to back in the marathon, Katie Ledecky winning the distance double, Marcell Jacobs winning the first 100m track title for Italy and the 4-way battle for the men's 1500m freestyle were all great moments.

All the hurdles, the Covid tests, the masks, the awarding teammates medals, the friendly TV time zone, and the world class performances made Tokyo 2020 one of the most satisfying Olympics in memory.

Jul 21, 2021

It's a 4 man weave this week with Erik and Mendy joining the show to preview the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

First up it's the NRL and Melbourne are clearly the class of the field at the moment. And they've been doing it without two of their best players.

The AFL is throwing up strange results every week. And this was no exception. Richmond beat Brisbane, but with Dusty Martin out for the season is their dynasty finally over? And the Melbourne Western Bulldogs clash this week should be a belter.

Supercars raced around Townsville again on the weekend. Where to now for a sport that doesn't have a lot of available tracks right now? Oran Park and Lakeside are no longer options. In the F1 Hamilton dive bombed Verstappen. We're not the British media so we won't defend Hamilton on this one.

And then it's the Olympic preview. We run through a few of the events we're really looking forward to. Race Climbing seems to have captured the imagination of the whole team. The Basketball should be one of the most competitive on record. And Pies has found a couple of events that could bring about a world record.

We finish off with some darts, NBA Finals and Tour de France talk.

It's a big show. But we had fun catching up.

The Producer is dealing with some gremlins in the system . But we've managed to put together another lockdown show via the marvels of the NBN.

First up it was a short week in the NRL and the Blues came up agonisingly short in State of Origin.

In the AFL the upsets continue with the Kangaroos beating West Coast in Perth and St Kilda outplaying Brisbane.

Supercars were back in Townsville and Shane Van Gisbergen is dominating his rivals. F1 at Silverstone this weekend.

Italy beat England in the Euro Cup Final. And Pies and BS couldn't be happier after the English fans trashed the Italy fans before the game and Leicester Square afterwards. They really are the worst fans in world sport.

Milwaukee have tied the NBA Finals with the 4 games going to the home side. Phoenix head home for the weekend and Pies needs them to lift.

And in the Tour de France Tadej Pogacar is dominating in the mountains and Mark Cavendish has been flying in the sprints. After a few crashes in the first week. It's become a battle of attrition for the riders that are left. Pogacar looks unbeatable though.

With the Sydney Covid lockdown continuing, Pies and The Producer have organised a Zoom call to get their stories straight.

In the NRL the Dragons had a barbecue, and a bunch of teams got flogged.

In the AFL the Giants showed true grit to repel Melbourne while West Coast really don't like playing at GMHBA Stadium.

Max Verstappen won another F1 Grand Prix. Lando Norris got McLaren on the podium again. And Red Bull have the Mercedes measure.

The People's Team Denmark are into a Semi Final and have a chance at playing Italy in the Final. England stand in their way.

Led by Chris Paul Phoenix beat Milwaukee in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. 3 more to go!

Tadej Pogacar is toying with them in the Tour de France. While Mark Cavendish has won 3 stages as a 36 year old.

Pies was asleep so Erik and The Producer cover all the latest in the NRL including a wrap of Origin 2 and they look ahead to this week's NRL games.

Then we're back to the full compliment as Pies returns to talk AFL. Leon Cameron is on thin ice, Western Bulldogs are a strong team and the Saints must be the most frustrating team to follow after a dominant victory over Richmond.

Max Verstappen won the Styrian GP, Denmark are the People's Team, although BS stakes his claims for Switzerland. And among it all, Italy have just been the best team.

New Zealand won the ICC Test Championship Final the NBA Playoffs are reaching a culmination, Caleb Ewan crashed out of the Tour de France in a crash-laden first week, while Tampa look too good in the Stanley Cup Final.

Colbee has been dropped back to reserves after scoring 2 tries and letting in 6 down his wing.

Pies and BS tackle all the drama surrounding the NRL. High shots take centre stage again. When should a player be sin binned? How low is low enough to be making a genuine attempt to miss the head? Can Trent Robinson make his mind up over when referees should take matters into their own hands? Plus we preview Origin 2. Not surprisingly, NSW will win comfortably again.

In the AFL Geelong beat Western Bulldogs after the siren. The Giants beat their twos and Jake Stringer had Launceston in a whirl as the Bombers beat Hawthorn.

Max Verstappen won in France and we cover all the other motorsport results.

The Euro Cup is down to the knockout stages, France and Italy are looking good. Denmark have bounced back also.

NBA Playoffs and we're down to an unlikely final 4. Phoenix have taken an early lead over the LA Clippers. While in the East Milwaukee outlasted Brooklyn and Atlanta finished off Ben Simmons and the Philadelphis 76ers.

On the back of recording the NRL Mid-year report and run to the finals show, the boys are back for the regular episode.

The show starts with Pies off riding his push bike so we have to get Colbee in to cover the NRL. The Eels get another big win against the Tigers and Colbee and the a Producer then discuss if the send off in the Brisbane & Canberra game was the correct call.

In NRL Supercoach Colbee is fighting being the first team member relegated. Last years Bats and Balls Cup winner the DWS Fleshpuppets is in a battle to make the finals. Every player gets 5 trades after Round 15 so it is go time.

Pies then stops in to cover the AFL and NBA. In the AFL the guys discuss if the Swans bubble has burst after a bad loss to the Hawks. Did GWS let one slip after a tied game against the last place Kangaroos. The Producer is happy as his Eagles got the win against the Tigers.

While in the NBA the team Pies tipped the show earlier in the year is doing well. Can the Suns go all they way?

Colbee then returns to talk a little motorsport. Supercars and F1 have races this weekend while Nascar and Indy Car had great races over the past weekend. Colbee and the Producer also cover some Cricket with the ICC Test Final being played this week between NZ and India.

Lastly we get Erik on the phone to talk about Euro 2020. Denmark had a tough 1st game, can they bounce back and get to the next stage?

The boys are back after a week off and the Antacrtic Blast has hit Sydney just in time for Origin 1. Thankfully the NRL moved it to balmy Townsville which should give us an entertaining game.

In the NRL the Panther Cubs suffered defeat for the first time in 2021. More on the horizon? The Titans blew it against the Storm and the Eels got revenge for the 2001 GF. Now we're all square.

In the AFL Melbourne keep rolling on, this time beating Brisbane at Giants Stadium. St Kilda continue to missfire in front of goal. And Richmond poured it on in the last quarter to finish all over the top of Essendon in Dreamtime at Optus.

In other sport the Azerbaijan GP gave us another great Formula 1 race. England keep on Englanding in cricket. The Suns disposed of the Lakers but we're just waiting to hand Brooklyn the trophy.

And with EURO Cup 2020 kicking off this week, we predict the winners of each group and the winners overall.
Pies likes France to beat Croatia in the Final.
BS is backing Hungary with Sweden and North Macedonia as his smokies.
While Erik thinks Denmark are primed to make a deep run at it.

Pies was placed on report last week for high contact. So while Pies is at the judiciary The Producer had to go to the bench again and Colbee joins the show.

The Producer and Colbee discuss the all the drama from Round 11. Players still have not learnt to tackle lower which saw 24 players on report, however how long is too long to penalise a player? Brad Arthur has selected Waqa Blake to start again and Colbee is not happy about it.

In AFL the GWS Giants had a great win agaist the West Coast Eagles in a tight game. The Lions got under Dusty's skin in their game and Colbee is happy with how his Bulldogs are going.

In Motorsport Max Verstappen won the Monaco GP in the F1, the Moto GP and Supercars return this weekend and Indy Cars saw former Supercar driver Scott McLaughlin has qualified well for the Indy 500.

The EPL season is now over and Man City are the Champions. This means #PiesKnows survives. Liverpool finished 3rd and Brighton 16th.

The Producer has a bee in his bonnet. And it's not because the NRL have had enough with high shots. For as long as this podcast has existed he's been advocating for refereeing the rules and you stamp out foul play. Finally the NRL have listened. But it seems the NRL media in general are a bit slow on the uptake. A few too many hits to the head?

We wrap up all the NRL games and give our tips for next week. Plus throw in a little Supercoach.

In the AFL GWS Giants let one slip against Richmond while Melbourne look like the real deal. Plus the West Coast forward line are firing.

We rattle home with some short shorts on Motorsport and NBA.
